Olympique Lyon retained their Ligue 1 title without playing yesterday after second-placed Girondins Bordeaux lost 3-2 at Lille.

They have beaten the record of St Etienne and Olympique Marseille by winning a fifth successive title. Les Verts were crowned from 1967 to 1970 while Marseille were champions from 1989 to 1992.

Gerard Houllier's Lyon side, with 75 points from 33 matches, cannot be caught by Bordeaux, who have 61 points after 34 games and now have just four matches left to play.
