Libyan-Maltese Chamber of Commerce to open office in Tripoli

At its first joint council meeting for 2006, the Council of the Libyan-Maltese Chamber of Commerce resolved to open an office in the Libyan capital from where the chamber's activities could be better promoted to the Libyan and expatriate business community. This office, with its own permanent staff, will offer all necessary commercial facilities and answer questions on "Doing Business between Libya and Malta".

The council meeting confirmed the election of Frank V. Farrugia as president of the chamber and Embejjer Wadi as vice-president.

The council of the Libyan-Maltese Chamber of Commerce is made up of five Maltese and five Libyan members, who are appointed by the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise and the General Union of Libyan Chambers of Commerce. The other members of the council are general secretary Abul Salam Danaf, treasurer Raymond Busuttil, Mustafa Shembesh, Simon Camilleri, Mohamed El Busefi, Tonio Casapinta, Anthony Micallef and Mowafek El Sarag. Dennis Vella is the chamber administration manager.

The council meeting was inaugurated in the presence of Dr Saad El Shlmani, secretary of the Libyan People's Bureau in Malta, who stressed the importance of the chamber in enlarging economic relations, thus expanding automatically other relations. Dr El Shlmani assured the chamber of the full co-operation of his office in the chamber's mission.

The council also highlighted the various challenges being faced by the chamber in view of the various positive developments on the Libyan business scenario and stressed the importance of synergies between the various institutions involved in Maltese-Libyan commercial relations.

The joint council meeting was followed up by dinner at Pin Tonino Restaurant at the Valletta Waterfront, which was attended by various personalities involved in Libyan-Maltese relations, among whom were Victor Galea, president of the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise and Dr George Cassar, president of the Libyan-Maltese Friendship Society and managing director of the Libyan-Maltese Holding Company. Guest of honour was Dr Francis Zammit Dimech, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts.
