HP warns printer users of hacking risk, Sophos reports

Experts at SophosLabs, Sophos's global network of virus, spyware and spam analysis centres, have reminded computer users of the importance of staying informed on security issues, following the news that Hewlett-Packard has identified a vulnerability in software used by owners of some of its printers.

The security vulnerability affects the Toolbox software installed alongside the Colour LaserJet 2500 and 4600 printers, and allows hackers to steal information from innocent users. HP has urged all users of the affected printer software to upgrade to the latest version.

"A vulnerability like this opens the door for hackers to spy upon your sensitive information. Not protecting yourself against this problem is like leaving your front door open when you pop down to the shops, and expecting to find that no-one has stolen your belongings," John de Giorgio of Shireburn Software, distributors for Sophos Anti-Virus, said.

"Users who are running the affected software should upgrade their HP software, available free of charge from hp.com, as soon as possible, and everyone should make sure they are fully informed of the latest security notifications."

Sophos continues to recommend companies to protect their desktops and servers with automatically updated anti-virus protection, and has published a link to more information and fixes from HP at: www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/articles/2006/04/hpprintervuln.html
