I refer to the item about the three children who where diagnosed with hepatitis. It was stated that one of the main ways of preventing this disease is hygiene.
How can our children learn about hygiene? Most of the public toilets are in a very poor, if not in a dangerous state. Some school toilets are a disaster. To wash their hands, one of the most important things to do to prevent disease, is sometimes more dangerous than not doing it at all since children have to touch the water tap. For example, the toilets at the Junior Lyceum, Hamrun, and at the primary school in Pembroke are among the dirtiest of such places I have ever seen, even worse than the ones at Upper Barrakka Gardens, in Valletta (and I hear tourists saying these are the worse).
Anyway, to teach our children proper hygiene, we have to start at home and, of course, at school where they spend a big part of their time.
Whoever is responsible please act now!
