Nature Trust has called on the authorities to ensure that those cutting branches from olive trees to be used for Good Friday processions and Passion plays have the necessary permit, in line with the tree and woodland protection regulations.

"It is unacceptable that trees are exploited in the name of tradition. Indiscriminate cutting of branches often weakens a tree, making it susceptible to disease. Often whole trees are uprooted and placed on stage or on processional statues. Given the scarcity of trees, this practice must not be allowed to continue and the existing legislation properly enforced," the NGO said.

Nature Trust believes the Church should be vigilant and ensure that all permits are in place during Holy Week to be in line with its recent proactive approach on environment issues.
