The President of Luther College, Richard Torgerson and his wife Judy, will be coming to Malta to attend a reception marking the 40th anniversary of the Malta-Luther connection.

It will be hosted by Vannessa Grima-Baldacchino Frazier, a 1990 graduate, on June 4.

They will be accompanied by Warren and Jan Berg who 40 years ago had travelled to Malta on a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship.

Prof. Berg taught business courses at the University of Malta and, in cooperation with Bryan Gera and the Malta Chamber of Commerce, a strong and mutually enriching relationship developed between the small private Liberal Arts College and Malta.

The Chamber sponsors a scholarship that has sent over 60 Maltese students to study at Luther, many of whom have returned to become successful business and civic leaders in Malta. Fr Peter Serracino Inglott, the former rector of the University of Malta, spent a semester guest lecturing at Luther which awarded him an honorary degree.

Every year, over a dozen students from Luther College (joined more recently by a sister school, Concordia College) spend a semester based in Malta studying Malta and the Mediterranean region.

Prof. Berg and his wife Jan served as hosts to most of the Maltese students attending Luther from the 1970s through the 1990s and returned to Malta on a second Fulbright in 1988.

In 1995, he authored An Historical Dictionary Of Malta, which is currently being updated by Uwe Rudolf, a Luther professor who is this year on sabbatical leave in Malta. All former students and friends of Luther both in Malta and abroad are invited to attend.

Several days of sightseeing will be organised for attendees following the reception event.
