Until Now the AD/HD Family Support Group has refrained from commenting on the situation which has developed between teachers and violent students/parents for the simple reason that we saw no need to.
Ms Susanne Garzia wrote intimating that AD/HD is a label that could be applied to children who are aggressive, violent, disrespectful and a danger to others (The Sunday Times, March 26). We hasten to disagree 100 per cent with this.
A child with AD/HD should not be any of these things. However a child with undiagnosed AD/HD, or untreated AD/HD will, in time, develop other psychiatric conditions which may lead him/her to be all of the above and that is where the difference lies.
The group has always insisted, and will continue to lobby for children to be diagnosed early, and for the whole family to be given the right help, counselling and necessary support on an on-going basis. It is essential that this happens not only at school, but also at home. One without the other will not work.
