On April 23, the Malta Amateur Athletic Association (MAAA) will be holding the second 10k race for Masters this year.
This one is being held over two five-kilometre laps at Marsascala.
The association has followed the decision taken by the European Association and changed the name of athletics events for athletes over the age of 35 to Masters whereas in the past these were referred to as Veterans.
The World Masters Athletic (WMA) events are judged at every five-year category from 35 years and over. One would see runners even at the age of 70 over distances such as 5K and even 10K.
A year ago, the WMA had decided to extend the definition of Masters male athletes as those at the age of 35 instead of 40 (same as women).
Trophies will be awarded to the winners in each five-year category as well as runners-up and third-place finishers. Cash prizes will also be given to the first three men and women who register the best technical performances. Winners are determined according to their result worked out on the computerised Age Graded Tables. A medal will also be given to each finisher.
Anyone wanting to take part can contact one of the clubs affiliated to the association for an application.
