The UN's refugee agency yesterday underlined the need to support Malta's efforts in the management of mixed flows of persons across the Mediterranean.

In a statement last night, the UNHCR said it hoped that Malta will obtain European financial assistance and will benefit from support in implementing durable solutions, as has recently been the case when a number of refugees from Malta were settled in the Netherlands.

The statement was released shortly after a resolution on the situation of refugees in Malta was overwhelmingly approved by the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The UNHCR stressed that providing reception to asylum seekers in open centres was always preferable to detention and more appropriate for persons seeking protection. These open centres could be run by NGOs who have the skills to provide better care - they could also prove to be less expensive to run.

"In view of the considerable challenge created in Malta by the arrival of mixed population flows, UNHCR reiterates its availability to work closely with the Maltese authorities and non-governmental agencies in finding solutions for refugees," the UNHCR said.

In addition, UNHCR will continue its joint efforts with the Maltese authorities to sensitise public opinion, specifically through an awareness campaign that was launched in January. The goal of the campaign is to promote greater understanding of the situation of asylum-seekers and refugees in Malta.
