Much has been written recently about the proposal to change Triq is-Sidra into a one-way street and give it a three-month trial period.
If Triq is-Sidra were to become one way, it would create congestion in nearby and narrow streets like Triq il-Ktajjen and Triq il-Hemel, through which traffic would be diverted ending in Triq is-Sirk, which is already a very chaotic road with parking on both sides and route buses passing through.
Route buses?! Wasn't that meant to be temporary too? That is what all residents were told when they protested and yet the bus has been passing through Triq is-Sirk for many years. So much for "temporary".
In my opinion, the proposal to change Triq is-Sidra into a one-way road is not a solution - it will only create more problems among Swieqi residents.
A quickly drawn-up petition has been signed by over 250 residents. Will the local council take the necessary steps to stop this measure or will the "trial period of three months" end up like the "temporary period" of the route buses?
