The documents of the five consortia eyeing the port cargo contract were opened on Monday.

The evaluation process will now begin and will lead to the choice of the new operator to run the ports by July.

The documents were opened in the presence of Malta Maritime Authority chairman Marc Bonello and the negotiating team.

When the process was launched last year, Dr Bonello had said the cargo handling rates at the Valletta port were the highest in Europe and hoped these would be slashed as a result of competitive fees resulting from the award of the contract.

The consortia are: Kuwait & Gulf Stevedoring Company Ltd; La Valletta Terminal Co (Malta) Ltd, made up of Salv. Bezzina & Sons Ltd, Salvu Meli & Sons Ltd and Joseph Paris; Malta Ports Terminals Ltd; TF Shipping Agencies Ltd, comprising Tumas Group Co. Ltd, Portek Ports (Mauritius) Ltd, and Portek International Ltd; and Malta Services Consortium, made up of Hili Company Ltd, GWU Holdings Ltd and PW Investments Plc.
