Italy's main low-fare airline, Meridiana, will start operating to Malta on June 1 at fares starting from €29 for a one-way flight, excluding taxes.
Meridiana will run two direct flights a week from and to Bologna using a 165-seater MD 82 aircraft.
Malta International Airport said the new service is the direct result of its marketing efforts to attract new airlines to the island.
"This has in turn strengthened the cooperation between MIA and Aeroporto di Bologna. Through this link Maltese travellers will have more options, at very low fares, to travel further in Italy and beyond, particularly for weekend breaks in the Emilia-Romagna region," MIA said. Meridiana expressed satisfaction that it has struck up a business relationship with MIA.
"For the first time in more than 40 years, Meridiana will be linking with this primary international destination.
"The flights are ideal for weekly holidays as well as weekend breaks to enjoy nature, underwater activities or to study English, an option being taken up by many Italians," the airline said.
Flights will depart Bologna airport on Thursdays and Sundays at 1.15 p.m. and arrive here at 3 p.m. The return flight leaves at 3.40 p.m., arriving in Bologna at 5.30 p.m.
