Three groups of home economics students from San Anton School took part in the first Mill-Kcina Tan-Nanna (Granny's kitchen) competition organised by the Malta Tourism Authority. Each group had to prepare a menu consisting of a starter for a lactose-intolerant person, a gluten-free main course and a dessert suitable for a diabetic.

The students competed with another 12 groups and cooked the three courses within an hour, a school spokesman said. Four professional judges, including the chairman of the Malta Culinary Association, Martin Camilleri, supervised and assessed the students. The head chef praised the students for their high standards in culinary skills and presentation, the spokesman said.

The school won all three prizes on offer. Elizabeth Galea, Bettina Mangion and Michaela Perotti won the gold medal. Amanda Magri Overend and Jessica Magri were awarded the silver medal and Kathy Zammit and Scott Gavin won bronze.

Celebrity chef Ainsley Harriot distributed the prizes. He also gave each student a signed copy of his new cookery book.
