I refer to 'Roamer's' column, specifically the subheading 'Batteries by the ton' (The Sunday Times, March 12).

First of all, WasteServ would like to thank your correspondent for highlighting its efforts on the collection of used batteries. Regarding comments about bring-in sites in Sliema, I would like to inform you that with Sliema council, we have identified five other areas where bring-in sites will be introduced for an enhanced service to the local community. These five new sites are among the 400 bring-in sites which will be introduced in Malta and Gozo by the end of the year.

Insofar as 'Roamer's' comments that "there must be others who would benefit from a bit of guidance as to what to do with remains of foodstuffs, dog faeces, milk cartons and such-like opposites", WasteServ would like to remind the public that a number of its representatives are visiting households in Malta and Gozo to inform and assist the public on issues arising from household waste separation at source.

The project, which is part-financed through the European Social Fund 2004-2006, started in October 2004. It aims to support Malta's principal resource by improving the employability of participants after supplying them with training which includes communications skills and technical knowledge about waste management.

The trainees have a commitment to promote the waste reduction, reuse and recycling message. To date the trainees have visited over 7,000 households. The project will continue until the end of this year, by which date around 20,000 households would have been visited.

Apart from this project, WasteServ will continue to intensify its communications campaign in the coming months and is providing information on how to dispose of waste wisely on the informative TV programme Mill-Ghatba 'l Barra every Saturday on TVM at 6 p.m.

More information on this scheme as well as on the issues of household waste separation at source can also be obtained by logging on to www.wasteservmalta.com under the Waste Separation section or by calling Freephone 8007-2200.
