May I express my thanks to the General Workers Union for their help in a dispute I had with my employers when I was sacked and hired three times over a subject where I was not a party to the problem. It was a ridiculous situation to be in.
I am a British subject with a work permit, so it was not just a case of losing my job without justification, it was a lot more serious: I would stand very little chance of being rehired by anyone else.
I spoke to Karmenu Vella, who was incredibly supportive. He, in turn, put me in touch with the legal department where I spoke to Dr Mifsud Bonnici and Dr DeBarro who took charge of the case with the result that I was reinstated with full back pay, a letter of apology and a letter sent to ETC advising them of the mistake made by my company. I also was awarded compensation.
I can only truly thank the GWU for their help - if anyone ever asks me what the point of being in a union is, I will certainly give them the answer.
