The Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) last month signed an agreement with the St John Rescue Corps.

MCAST and the St John Rescue Corps agreed to co-operate for the benefit of both institutions.

The objectives of this collaboration are to offer a structured and formal environment that will provide MCAST students with the opportunity of receiving training in light rescue techniques and first aid.

The agreement also aims to entice MCAST students to form part of a voluntary organisation which may be called up to support the constituted authorities in the event of a natural calamity, like earthquakes, floods, or exceptional situations caused by natural disasters.

This agreement also includes the delivery of training programmes and exchange of services between MCAST and St John Rescue Corps relating to vocational education and training.

This includes curriculum, equipment and facilities provision, human resources and staff development.

The contribution by MCAST students will be used as evidence and will be credited for achievement purposes in order to obtain the MCAST Award in Enterprise, Leadership and Social Awareness.

Frank Edwards, principal and CEO of the college, mentioned that this is important for students as they are given the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities from which both they and the community will benefit.

He also stressed that St John Rescue Corps provides students with character-building opportunities in particular helping them develop their leadership, management and personal development skills.

Captain Reuben Lanfranco, Corps Commander of the St John Rescue Corps, mentioned that MCAST students and staff would have the same training prospects as other members of the Corps, including overseas training.
