Marsamxett yesterday won the open category of the Freedom Day regatta and Marsa won the reserves category.

Set against the backdrop of the imposing Grand Harbour bastions - dyed gold by a warm afternoon sun - the event did not draw the large crowds it used to.

In the open category, Marsamxett obtained 60 points followed by Cospicua with 58, Senglea - 27, Marsa - 22 and Birzebbuga with eight points.

In the reserves competition, the Marsa team accumulated a total of 58 points followed by Marsamxett with 48 points, Kalkara - 36, Cospicua - 24 and Senglea with six points.

Taking part in the regatta were Vittoriosa, Cospicua, Kalkara, Marsamxett, Marsa, Senglea and Birzebbuga. Tourism and Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech presented trophies to the winners.

Police presence was conspicuous as in other regattas. It had been stepped up after the regatta of September 8, 2003, when trouble broke out within the enclosed area just in front of the Customs Department. On that occasion, a number of supporters had charged for the trophies and medals, kicking and throwing some of them into the sea. No incidents were reported yesterday.

Last year, Marsa won the open category of the Freedom Day regatta and Marsamxett won the reserves category.
