The General Workers' Union yesterday presented a set of proposals to the government over the water and electricity surcharge which has been a sticky issue since its introduction last October 25 to make up for the hike in international oil prices.
Following an hour-long meeting with the Prime Minister, GWU secretary general Tony Zarb described the proceedings as positive adding that they would be followed up in the coming weeks.
The union had originally proposed the introduction of rebates, new income tax bands and a review of the Retail Price Index every two months to cushion the burden of the surcharge. However, Mr Zarb said the proposals the GWU made yesterday were "amended slightly".
Mr Zarb said he preferred not to comment before Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had time to look into the union's proposals.
The Office of the Prime Minister declined to comment on the meeting.
