It was sad to read about the demise of the Maltese cow Bettina, the last of a rare breed found on the island (March 20). Let us hope this will not happen to the Maltese goat, as pointed out by Mark Brincat (March 24).

Agro-tourism could be lucratively productive and a demand for goats' cheese, at least in the UK, could be tapped.

The famous Maltese gbejna, I find, is made out of cows' milk nowadays when it should be made from goats' milk as in the past.

Here in the UK, especially in Carmarthenshire, Wales, goat farms are flourishing as goats' cheese (Greece is a big supplier) is becoming the trendiest food superseding other local cheeses.

Every effort by the government should be made to help farmers maintain these old breeds.
