Obituary

CASTILLO. On March 24, at St Luke's Hospital, Major VICTOR CASTILLO, ED, KGC, COSG, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his passing his sons Roger and Alan, his grandchildren Alan, Richard, Diana, Alana and Victor, his great-grandchildren Camila and Millie, together with Anna and Tatiana, Pauline and Tessie, Olaf, Sarah and Marthanne, his brother-in-law Raymond and his wife Ana-Maria, other relatives and friends. - R.I.P.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital tomorrow at 8.30 a.m. for Stella Maris parish church, Sliema, where Mass praesente cadavere will be celebrated at 9 a.m., followed by interment in the family grave at the Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to the Holy Family Home for the Elderly, Naxxar, will be appreciated.

LEONE-GANADO. On March 24, at St Luke's Hospital, HUGH, ex-Customs Officer, widower of Tessy née Randon, aged 90, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. He leaves to mourn his loss his sons Albert and his wife Eileen, Godfrey and his wife Cecilia, Joseph and his wife Helene, David who so lovingly cared for him, and Philip and his wife Josette, his daughter Miriam and her husband Adrian Fenech. He also leaves to mourn his loss his 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren as well as his brothers Aldo and Carlo, in-laws, nephews and nieces, relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St Luke's Hospital tomorrow at 8 a.m. for Balzan parish church where Mass praesente cadavere celebrating his new life in Christ will be said at 8.30 a.m., followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery. No flowers by request but donations to Dar tal-Providenza will be greatly appreciated. The family regret they are unable to receive visitors.

PULLICINO. On March 25, EILEEN née Naudi, aged 71, widow of Anthony, passed peacefully away comforted by the rites of Holy Church. She leaves to mourn her irreparable loss her daughters Stephanie and her husband Winni Mosé, Pat and her husband Chris Curmi, and Graziella, her grandchildren Francesca, Alexia and Elviana, her sister Tania, wife of Peter Paul Portelli, her brothers Edwin, Anthony and Maria, and Herbert and Tania, her in-laws Victor Pullicino of Australia and Yvonne Pullicino, her nephews and nieces among whom Fr Claude Portelli, other relatives and friends.
The funeral leaves St James Capua Hospital today at 1.45 p.m. for St Gregory's parish church, Sliema, where Mass praesente cadavere will be said at 2 p.m., followed by interment at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery (top gate). Donations to the Ursuline Crèche will be appreciated. Lord grant her peaceful eternal rest she so much deserves.

Requiem Masses

On the trigesima die of the death of MARY LA ROSA, a Mass for the repose of her soul will be said tomorrow at 6.30 p.m. at St Gregory's parish church, Sliema. The attendance of relatives and friends will be appreciated.

Rings Stolen

Two rings have been stolen from a hotel in St Julians on Saturday, March 25. The rings are of great sentimental value and carry initials and date. A reward will be given for the return of the rings. Owner can be contacted on 7920 8097.

Historic Towns Conference

The Historic Town and Villages International Committee (CIVVIH) has held its first Mediterranean regional conference, in Patras, Greece.

The meeting, during which a Mediterranean committee was established, was chaired by Ray Bondin, chairman of CIVVIH. Dr Bondin was elected for a second term as president last year.

CIVVIH aims to encourage scientific research in the problems relating to historic cities and villages. All the scientific research is published each year. It is formed of over 200 top experts in the field of heritage protection of cities and villages.

About 30 delegates from 20 Mediterranean countries attended the Patras meeting which focused on the specific problems related to historic port cities in the Mediterranean. The conference was inaugurated by the mayor of Patras.

Since becoming president of the organisation, Dr Bondin has also formed a regional committee for Ibero-America. The Mediterranean regional committee of CIVVIH will be meeting every year.

Folklore Exhibition

Art students at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce held an exhibition called Folklore And Cultures at Palazzo De La Salle, in Valletta.

The exhibition was opened by Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech. It depicted the cultural and folkloristic patrimony of 19 nations seen through the eyes of 21 students taught by Matthew Cassar.

The students, after having researched, analysed and developed the theme regarding each country, drew up two and three dimensional works, using various media, on the cultural and folkloristic patrimony of the country in question.

Photo Competition

The Malta Photographic Society has announced its 41st Open Annual Photographic Competition and Exhibition.

Monochrome and colour prints, as well as colour slides can be submitted at the society's premises in 137, Old Bakery Street, Valletta on April 15 from 9 a.m. till noon and on April 17 from 5.30 to 7.30 p.m.

Entry forms together with competition rules and conditions may be collected from leading photographic outlets and from the Malta Photographic Society every Thursday between 6 and 7.30 p.m. These can also be downloaded from www.maltaphotographicsociety.org.

Chamber Seminar

The Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise, in collaboration with the Technical Assistance Information Exchange Instrument of the European Commission (TAIEX), will hold a one-day seminar on Intellectual Property Rights at the Chamber in Valletta on May 2 at 9 a.m.

The seminar is envisaged to discuss European legislation pertaining to the protection of trade marks and designs as well as intellectual property rights relating to the information society.

Attendance will be free of charge and the number of participants has been limited to 80 people on a first come, first served basis.

Use Of Statistics

The university's department of public policy will be holding its annual presentation and public lecture on Thursday at 6.30 p.m. at the Erin Serracino Inglott Hall.

This year's lecture - The Use Of Statistics In Policy-Making - is being delivered by Alfred Camilleri.

A former graduate of the department of public policy, Mr Camilleri was, until recently, director of the National Office of Statistics. In January, he was appointed permanent secretary at the Finance Ministry.

The annual presentation serves to bring together former graduates of public policy and their tutors and to celebrate the success of former public policy students in Maltese public life, both in industry, the public service and politics.

Parenting Skills

The Cana Movement will run three parental skills courses for parents of three to 19-year-old children.

One of the courses starts on April 20 at 9.30 a.m. at the Cana Centre, 21, The Mall, Floriana; the other at 6.30 p.m. at Cana Home, 147, Cospicua Road, Paola and the third on April 21 at Cana Home, Emanuele Vitale Street, Rabat at 6.30 p.m.

An attendance certificate will be given. There will be a participation fee of Lm5 for one person, Lm6 for a couple.

Holy Week Exhibition

The Philharmonic Society La Vittoria will hold an exhibition to commemorate the Holy Week festivities at the La Vittoria Band Club near the Mellieha parish church, between April 6 and April 14.

The La Vittoria band and choir will perform a musical programme under the direction of Joseph Vella on the opening day.

The exhibition will be open on weekdays between 5 and 8 p.m., on Palm Sunday between 9 a.m. and noon and between 4 and 8 p.m., on Maundy Thursday between 5.30 and 11 p.m. and on Good Friday between 9 a.m. and noon.

Poetry Evening

Another edition of Poezijaplus will be held at 7.30 p.m. today in the Manoel Theatre courtyard, Valletta, providing an opportunity for those attending to appreciate some literary works by female writers.

Soprano Louiselle Pace Gouder will perform some poems by Ruzar Briffa to music penned by Joseph Abela Scolaro.

Genetics Course

The European School of Genetic Medicine of the University of Bologna will run the 10th course in medical genetics between April 26 and May 2.

Maltese participants will be able to attend the course at the Remote Training Centre at the Gateway Building, University of Malta.

Public Policy Lecture

The Department of Public Policy will hold its annual presentation and public lecture to celebrate the success of its graduates on March 30.

Alfred Camilleri, a former graduate of the department, will lecture on The Use Of Statistics In Policy-Making.

Mr Camilleri was, until recently, Director of the National Office of Statistics and in late January was appointed Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Finance.

The lecture will be held at the Erin Serracino Inglott Hall, University of Malta, Tal-Qroqq at 6.30 p.m. and will be open to the public.

Band Concert

The Beland Band of Zejtun will present a concert next Sunday at its club under the baton of Mro Ray Sciberras. Soprano Rosabelle Bianchi will take part.

The programme will feature Marcia Religiosa by Paolino Vassallo, Stabat Mater by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Sepulto Domine by Carlo Diacono and Marcia Funebre also by Paolino Vassallo. There will also be poem reading, historical notes and the playing of funeral marches.

The concert starts at 7.30 p.m. Entrance is free.

Skolasport Football

Over 40 young people aged between 11 and 16 are attending football sessions sponsored by Kellogg's at Skolasport every Saturday morning at the Marsa Sports Grounds.

Sessions at Skolasport include physical exercises such as warming up, sprints and ball control, rules of the game and maintaining a healthy team spirit.

Skolasport also organises friendly matches and tournaments.

Farewell call

Members of the Italian Military mission called on outgoing Italian Ambassador Alvise Memmo at his private residence, in Ta' Xbiex, and presented him with a commemorative plate. The military were led by Col Salvatore Fadda, commander of the Italian Mission.
