The Malta Aviation Museum is organising an open weekend between Friday and Sunday.

Visitors will be able to watch live historical re-enactments, appreciate the thrill of running vintage aircraft engines, follow guided tours around the museum and watch the progress made on the various restoration projects currently being undertaken in the museum's workshops.

Restoration projects currently underway include the restoration to taxiing condition of a WWII Hawker Hurricane Mk IIA fighter which was recovered from the seabed at Wied iz-Zurrieq (in final stages of restoration) and the overhaul of a 1930s DH Tigermoth biplane which is being restored to flying conditions. Demonstrations will be given by local aviation artists.

Apart from a fine collection of 14 historic aircraft the museum also houses a variety of aircraft engines, aircraft models and dioramas, airfield vehicles and equipment as well as arms and uniforms.

A display of wartime vehicles will be set up by Military Vehicles Collectors Club on museum grounds.

Throughout this open weekend visitors will also have the opportunity to sit in historic fighters including the Supermarine Spitfire and get a photograph of themselves piloting the aircraft.

Entrance fee to this event is at a discounted rate of Lm1.50 per person (10-16 year olds: 50c).  Ample parking space is available.  The museum can be reached also by public transport buses numbers: 65; 80 and 86 and a bus stop is located just in front of the museum complex.

With every ticket purchased, visitors will be entitled to participate in a lottery with a chance to win a 30-minute microlight flight kindly sponsored by Island Microlight Club.

More information about the Aviation Museum can be found at www.maltaaviationmuseum.com

All proceeds from this event will go towards the museum expansion project.
