Alfred Sant and his Labour Party delegation yesterday met the Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister, Zhang Yesui, for talks in Beijing.

The Labour Party said the delegation made it clear during the official talks that a future Labour government would not allow Malta's membership of the European Union to hinder its links with non-EU countries such as China.

Dr Sant expressed his opposition to the independence of Taiwan and pledged his support for the One China policy.

Other issues discussed were how to strengthen economic, political and cultural relations between Malta and China, the situation in the Middle East and Iraq and the role of the United Nations in settling international disputes.
