Klaus Toepfer, executive director of the United Nations Environment Programme, was bestowed a degree honoris causa by the University of Malta in recognition of his long-standing contribution towards the environment and sustainable development.

The honour was presented to Dr Toepfer during a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi among other personalities.

Dr Toepfer, who is also the deputy secretary general of the UN, gave a lecture on the theme Environment For Development.

During his stay in Malta he met officials from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and from environmental non-government organisations.
