The General Workers' Union said yesterday Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had agreed to meet the union to discuss the water and electricity surcharge.

The union said it had been given an appointment for Wednesday at the Prime Minister's office. The GWU has repeatedly asked the government for a meeting to discuss the issue claiming the surcharge had placed excessive burdens on workers.

GWU secretary general Tony Zarb said the union had asked to meet Dr Gonzi four times since January, adding that he had been given an appointment only last Tuesday.
