Drop in Maltese air passengers

Maltese passengers in January this year totaled 12,162, the National Statistics Office said.

Of these, 11,895 passengers departed by air - a decrease of 15.7 per cent over the same month a year ago.

The overseas stay abroad of the majority of Maltese air passengers - 96.6 per cent - did not exceed six months. In the month under review, the most popular destinations among Maltese air passengers were the UK (31.9 per cent), Italy (17.9 per cent) and Germany (6.9 per cent). When compared to the same month last year, Maltese air departures to the United Kingdom and Germany dropped by 7.2 and 15.3 per cent respectively while those to Italy went up by 7.5 per cent.

Other drops were registered in the number of Maltese air passengers departing to the Netherlands, Spain, Tunisia and a group of "other" markets.

An increase was recorded in outbound passengers travelling to France.
