O Suspected Islamist militants blew up a police vehicle in northwestern Pakistan yesterday, killing seven people, including three policemen and three paramilitary troops, officials said. The vehicle was on a routine patrol on the outskirts of the town of Dera Ismail Khan when the bomb apparently planted in a dusty road exploded as it passed over.

O At US-hosted talks near Tel Aviv yesterday, Israel and the Palestinians decided on arrangements for basic foodstuffs to enter Gaza to ward off a humanitarian crisis in the territory. Richard Jones, the US ambassador to Israel, said after the session at his residence that food and other essential goods would be sent from Egypt to Gaza through Israel's southern Kerem Shalom crossing today.

O Benin voters went to the polls for the second time in two weeks yesterday with independent Yayi Boni enjoying strong political backing in a decisive presidential run-off against Adrien Houngbedji. Mr Boni, a former head of the West African Development Bank who is a newcomer to the political scene, had finished well ahead of veteran politician Houngbedji in a March 5 first round vote, but he failed to gain the 50 per cent required to win outright.

O German parliamentarians from the right and left yesterday criticised tentative government plans to send German troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo, saying the EU-organised mission was ill-defined and unrealistic.

O Taliban rebels raided a police post in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar yesterday, killing two policemen, a government official said. Four policemen were missing after the overnight attack, the latest in a wave of violence as more foreign peacekeepers prepare to deploy to the south. Two Taliban fighters were killed in the assault on the police post, said Interior Ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanizai.

O An Egyptian man has apparently recovered from a suspected case of bird flu, Egypt's health ministry said yesterday, a day after announcing the virus had killed a woman in the same part of the country.
