Formula One Grand Prix fans will this season be able to enjoy races with a commentary in Maltese, starting from this weekend's race in Malaysia broadcast by Melita Cable on Melita Sports and the Sports Channel.

Pierre Vella, the Formula One-crazy financial controller of the Allied Group, will give technical commentaries for the Grand Prix qualifying sessions on Saturdays as well as for the Sunday afternoon races.

The Maltese commentary of Formula One was first introduced in 1999 when Net TV started broadcasting the races. For the first three years, Mr Vella gave the commentary alongside sports commentator George Micallef.

Mr Micallef was replaced by Charles Camenzuli during the fourth year, after which local broadcasts came to a halt.

Mr Vella, who says the live Maltese commentary boosted the sport's local following, explained that the commentary this time will complement the English commentary supplied with the feed which is retransmitted by Melita.

He is also planning to report live from the track during particular races in Europe.

Besides the live commentary, Mr Vella will be presenting Oversteer, a programme analysing race results which will also be a curtain raiser for the next event. It will be broadcast every Thursday following a race.
