The Labour Party's councillors section yesterday welcomed the fact that Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg, who is also responsible for local councils, is calling an early election for the Local Councils Association.

The section said in a statement the time had come for the association to reflect the Labour Party's absolute majority in councils. One could not have the executive of the association dominated by a Nationalist majority when the MLP had an absolute majority of mayors in Malta and Gozo as well as 44 councillors more than the Nationalist Party, it said.

The minister and his government, it said, should draw up an electoral system which would not give the current perverse result. It added that a system such as that used in general elections could prevent such an anomaly.
