Australia utility back Elton Flatley announced his retirement from rugby for medical reasons yesterday.

The 28-year-old, who played 38 tests for the Wallabies at centre and flyhalf, has suffered problems with his vision for some time following a number of head injuries.

Flatley, who played over 100 games for Queensland, set a world record for the fastest international try when he crossed after just 18 seconds in a 2003 World Cup match against Romania.

"It's a big loss for the Wallabies, to be without someone of his experience," Australia coach John Connolly said.
