Two men charged with helping immigrants escape from Malta, and who had been granted bail on arraignment, have been re-arrested following an application filed by the Attorney General.
Dennis Mackay, 32, of Valletta and Gordon Dimech, 28, of Hamrun had each been granted bail against a Lm1,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of Lm10,000 after they were arraigned and charged with aiding and abetting immigrants escape from Malta last December 21.
But, following an application filed by the Attorney General, Chief Justice Vincent De Gaetano revoked the bail conditions of the men - who both have a criminal record - and ordered their re-arrest in light of the serious nature of the case where the prosecution's witnesses still had to testify.
Lawyers José Herrera, Roberto Montalto and Joseph Giglio are defence counsel.
