The Water Services Corporation said its investigations showed that the water that seeped into St Paul's Grotto in Rabat was rainwater.

It described as "completely unfounded" allegations made in certain sections of the media that damage in the grotto was caused by water leaking from WSC mains.

The WSC said no defects or damage to its system were found during pressure tests carried out on the water distribution system.
