In January I wrote about foreign-born people of Maltese parentage who had been required to renounce their foreign citizenship to become Maltese. I am still waiting for a reply from the Department of Citizenship and Expatriate Affairs explaining why we had to renounce our citizenship to become Maltese when the 1964 Constitution states that we never ceased to be Maltese.

We want an explanation. We do not want to be told that the 1964 law applies only to those applying for dual citizenship (no law is passed today and expected to kick into life 35 years later). That would be an absurd thing to say!

How do you explain to those people who had obtained their dual citizenship that during that period they were treated as foreigners with an 'A' on their identity cards, who were then told that they had always been Maltese, since 1964?
