Madrid should not be put off by the failure of its bid to hold the 2012 Olympics and should try again for the 2016 Games, says IOC president Jacques Rogge.

"Madrid had a very good bid and was only two votes short of reaching the final round of voting," Rogge said.

"My personal opinion is Madrid should make a bid for 2016 because the positive atmosphere created by its work for 2012 will still hold until 2009. But no one can guarantee it will last until 2013 when the vote for the 2020 Games takes place."
