Europe's football authorities will be urged by EU lawmakers on Tuesday to give extra powers to referees so they can stop matches because of racist abuse. The European Parliament will pass a resolution in Strasbourg demanding UEFA back new guidelines for referees who want to tackle racism.

Clubs or countries whose supporters, players or officials persistently commit racist offences also risk being thrown out of competitions under the plan. The English FA will mark the occasion in London to highlight its support of the initiative. It sent a letter to every British MEP urging them to sign up.
