The Malta Maritime Authority said yesterday it was investigating the sinking of the Malta-registered vessel Teklifvka off the Egyptian coast earlier in the day.

The 16-year old ship, of nearly 4,000 gross tons, was heading towards Port Said carrying containers when it sank in heavy seas.

Twelve of its 15-man crew were rescued by two vessels which answered a distress call, but another three were missing.

A search is continuing.

The MMA said no pollution was reported by the Egyptian authorities.

A Syrian ship was also reported sunk in the storm.
