Martial arts for children

I totally agree with the idea expressed by Alex Caruana Carabez that children should learn self-defence (February 27).

Although Malta is one of the safest countries to live in, a recent increase in violence (including rapes, domestic violence and road rage) has been noted.

In recent days, our media have been flooded with serious cases of violence. These incidents may have psychological effects on the victims and their families.

Self-defence is an important dimension for all human beings. It is a set of awareness, assertiveness and verbal confrontation skills with safety strategies and physical techniques that enable one to successfully escape, resist and survive violent attacks. Martial arts (such as kung fu, karate, aikido) teach how one can defend oneself when in danger. They are not about violence and being aggressive towards people.

Everyone must understand the importance of being aware of his surroundings all the time and try to prevent dangerous situations from occurring. If one is physically attacked then one can use what one has learnt to avoid being injured.

In many countries, martial arts and self-defence techniques are included in the school curriculum. These techniques give children experience in avoiding unfortunate violent accidents.

Apart from kung fu lessons, our club also offers self-defence courses for women and children (from six years of age). Great improvement is visible in people enrolling in such courses. People sharpen their reflexes, gain a wider range of mobility and flexibility and increase strength.

Martial arts are often neglected in today's society. They can help protect our children and at the same time provide them with discipline, respect and well-being.
