Labour Party leader Alfred Sant said yesterday his party was willing to back a quota system aimed at assisting women occupy decision-making posts.
But the system had to be applied with care and without haste, he added.
Speaking during a discussion meeting with women candidates for next Saturday's council elections on the occasion of Woman's Day, Dr Sant said he was not convinced women were less exploited today than they were 10 or 20 years ago.
The MLP considered the quota system as a temporary mechanism until the necessary changes took place so that women would occupy decision-making posts without hindrance.
Once the Nationalist Party has accepted the quota system after it had been against it for a long time, there was the need for more reflection to see how it can be gradually put into practice, he said.
