William Flynn (March 1) expected me to compare only lettuce with lettuce rather than ponder on the principle of the suitability or otherwise of having Christian motifs on coins be they euro, lira or skudi. He forgot that I was replying to his letter of February 16 wherein he stated: "But to put Christ's image on any currency...". Aren't skudi and lira part of any currency for Mr Flynn?

Incidentally, in the same letter he mixed lettuce with other ingredients (and past the expiry date) including "monetary cash integer" of about 500 years ago. But if Mr Flynn insists on lettuce with lettuce I shall feed him only lettuce on euro plates.

I start with referring him again to Alfred Zahra de Domenico's letter (February 9) stating that "even the commemorative Vatican euro coins have carried images of the Madonna and Christ." This I am in a position to confirm. The €10 coin of 2002 depicts on one side an image of the risen Christ bringing peace and comfort to the suffering world while that of 2003 depicts Christ handing Peter the keys to heaven. The €5 coin of 2003 shows our Lady of Pompei with the infant Christ on her knees flanked by St Domenic and St Catherine receiving the Holy Rosary. The 2004 euro coin has an image of our Lady of Lourdes.

Lettuce with lettuce Mr Flynn!

I wonder what is all this interest in Malta from an Australian, although I have an inkling that Mr Flynn is a Maltese emigrant to Australia from his use of the Maltese idiom about lettuce translated into English with a slight variation.
