A Zebbug man was yesterday charged with trying to kill a man when he repeatedly hit him in vital areas of his body last weekend.

Magistrate Lawrence Quintano heard Philip Cauchi, 33, plead not guilty to the attempted murder of Tonio Zammit and seriously injuring him in the early hours on Sunday morning at the Pender Place car park in St Julians.

Mr Zammit is the son of Ninu Zammit, Minister for Resources and Infrastructure.

Mr Cauchi was denied bail after the magistrate noted the serious nature of the crime and that there was the fear that Mr Cauchi would tamper with evidence. This, after the magistrate heard that Mr Cauchi's girlfriend was a key witness in the case.

Police Inspectors Martin Sammut and Carmelo Abdilla prosecuted.

Lawyers José Herrera and Roberto Montalto appeared for Mr Cauchi while lawyers Emmanuel Mallia and Giannella Caruana Curran appeared for Mr Zammit.
