Professor Juanito Camilleri, CEO at Melita Cable plc, was last week nominated for the post of Rector of the University of Malta.

In a statement, Melita Cable plc said that though this nomination could result in his eventual departure from the company, Professor Camilleri will retain his current post until the outcome of the election is known.

"In the past two weeks I have had several friends and peers strongly insisting that I should put forward my nomination for the post of rector. The decision to put forward my name for this election was very onerous as I joined Melita Cable plc less than five months ago in which time I have forged a great working relationship with the board, my senior management team, and the employees at large.

"If I am elected rector, I will be sad to leave my current post at Melita, but I am confident that the company will continue to grow from strength to strength as a leading triple-play operator," Professor Camilleri told The Sunday Times.

Joe Gasan, chairman at Melita, said he preferred to have Professor Camilleri stay on as CEO, but understood that he could contribute greatly to the country if elected rector.

"If Professor Camilleri is elected rector, Melita's loss will be the country's gain. I wish him the very best of luck in his endeavours," Mr Gasan said.

"This said, I am very pleased to announce that in the coming days Professor Camilleri will be appointed director on the board of Melita and, if elected, he will continue to contribute to the strategic direction of the company in this non-executive role. Come what may, it will be business as usual at Melita," Mr Gasan added.
