Architecture in Malta during the British Colonial Period (1800-1964)' is the title of a lecture to be given on Wednesday March 15 at 7 p.m. in the Music Room at St James Cavalier, Valletta.
The British Culture Association has hosted lectures on various aspects of British Culture and on the interrelationship between Maltese culture and British culture. For the first time, however, it is presenting an illustrated lecture on architecture in Malta between 1800 and 1964, the period of British colonial rule.
The lecturer, Conrad Thake, an architect and architectural historian who has a doctorate from UCLA at Berkeley, is an expert on the subject. He is the co-author of a recent book, published by Midsea Books, on this very subject.
In his forthcoming lecture as in his book, he treats both the buildings and other structures erected by British architects and designers and the work of Maltese architects during this period, work often influenced, more or less, by architectural trends in Great Britain as well as by the work of architects in other European countries.
Dr Thake is an excellent speaker. His recent lecture for Heritage Malta on the conservation of 20th century buildings in Malta aroused great interest. Non-members of the BCA are warmly invited.
