With Reference to Mrs Emily Barbaro Sant's letter (The Sunday Times, February 11), WasteServ would like to acknowledge residents' efforts to separate clean recyclables at the bring-in sites.
The rate of participation is extremely encouraging when one considers that we have registered a 50 per cent increase over the amount of separated waste in 2004. This clearly shows the public's enthusiasm and commitment, as well as more overall awareness about waste management issues.
To date, there are 70 bring-in sites around Malta and Gozo and by the end of this year these will be increased to 400. This will make the system more accessible and convenient for households to separate at source and dispose of waste. This project is coupled with an intensive educational campaign, both co-financed via the European Union's European Regional Development Fund.
The suggestion of having a bring-in site within the precinct of St Luke's Hospital is indeed valid and Waste-Serv can assure the public that it has been included in the suggestions for the new bring-in sites.
