The situation is that it really might develop that way for most. The Consumers' Association is worried that the situation developed in such a way that if someone intends to watch all the games in the final tournament, not only must s/he subscribe to Melita Cable but must also pay a premium fee.
The Consumers' Association considers that Melita Cable was allowed to assume a monopolistic situation and is very aggressive to end up with monopoly profits. The association shares the frustration and anger of many consumers. We feel that consumers are being cheated of their rights.
Unfortunately, Melita Cable has been allowed to do just that. We have already written to the Communications Authority and asked them to intervene. We have also asked this authority to ensure that the cable network should no longer be allowed to be in the sole hands of a supplier but should be open to other operators who might also wish to provide cable television. This will limit the possibility of a dominant position.
However, we believe that the Consumer and Competition Division has the duty to intervene on two counts. Firstly, to investigate and use its powers to ensure that the monopolistic situation does not end up with Melita gaining the monopoly profits. The division has both the power and the duty to see that this does not happen.
Secondly, the Division also has the duty and power to stop Melita from changing the programmes at will. This is taking place due to an unfair clause in the contract - that consumers are obliged to accept when they subscribe to Melita's services. The Consumer and Competition Division should take the necessary steps to stop this abuse.
The Broadcasting Authority can also take action and ensure that the consumers' right to follow the last World Cup tournament is safeguarded.
Apart from perceiving Melita Cable's actions as arrogant and blackmailing customers also feel frustrated at the authorities' inability to safeguard their rights.
