Carnival has become an excuse for excessive alcohol consumption, with the public being constantly exposed to alcohol abuse in public places around Valletta, Floriana, in street parties and in other villages around Malta and Gozo, according to Sedqa.

The government agency against substance abuse said that considering the intense competition, the consumption of alcohol in public places could result in accidents, violence and other improper behaviour.

It is inappropriate that children are exposed to alcohol abuse in public places as they might think that drinking is the way to celebrate, Sedqa said.
