Appreciation - Alfred Mallia

Fr John Caruana Maringa PR - Brasil

I have just received the news from my niece Charmaine that Alfred Mallia, formerly of St Julians/San Gwann, has just passed away.

He was a great friend of mine and through him his wife Mary Anne and his children Malcolm, Peter, Anne Marie and Maureen, and on his side his brothers and sisters.

This week I was spring cleaning three drawers of papers and among other things a letter of his cropped up - written to me way back on the feast of Christ the King in 1985. I re-read the letter. And there was he, a man who bothered, a man that had an opinion, loved his family, dedicated to his job - all the jobs that life presented to him (as it turned out to be) - but who at the same time, as he told me in that letter, "you have to bother with the challenges that life presents to you but not to that extent that you do not enjoy in life that which you can enjoy".

He had a deep sense of justice, and, like all those who treasure this quality, can at times become a sign of contradiction. But at the same time he had a deep sense of fair play and humour. Like all of us he was not perfect, but he strove to be of service - including to his country - making the best of life while accepting one's limitations.

My prayers are for him and for his family but, especially, for his all time caring wife. Mary Anne, accept the moment, as always be brave, and if you feel a bit lost without him, imagine if the opposite had occurred; how he would have felt.

Mary Anne I am praying for you all.

Although two years have passed,
Since you went away,
I think of you, my dolly,
Every minute of the day.
Each night before I sleep,
I picture your sweet smile,
Every morning when I wake,
I can smell you for a while.
I always try to picture,
How you would look today,
Nearly five and as beautiful,
As when you went to lay.
You are now my guardian angel,
Taking care of me,
That's what makes me happy,
Knowing you're here with me.

From your dearest brother Nicky.
