Alternattiva Demokratika has welcomed the decision by the Sliema local council to appeal Mepa's decision clearing the demolition of the house in Ghar il-Lembi Street, Sliema, which has been the subject of much controversy.
AD's local councillor in Sliema, Michael Briguglio said: "Following my proposal during the last local council meeting on February 22, a majority of local councillors representing the three political parties agreed that the Sliema local council should submit a formal appeal to Mepa against the decision to demolish the house in question. The house happens to be one of the oldest surviving buildings in Sliema and is situated within Sliema's urban conservation area. If Malta's Structure Plan were to be followed, this house would be protected and not destroyed."
AD chairman Dr Harry Vassallo added: "The fact that a majority of local councillors supported Michael Briguglio's proposal confirms the important role of AD in local councils, acting as a voice for residents which brings about cross-party consensus.
"We applaud the councillors who supported Mr Briguglio's proposal and hope that the appeal submitted by the council will save the Sliema house".
