Recently Melita Cable happily announced they had bought the exclusive rights to transmit the World Cup, Formula 1 and the Uefa Champions League, besides also showing the Premier League, Carling Cup, England's home games, La Liga, Bundesliga, Coca-Cola Championship, FA cup, Golf, Wimbledon and the Rugby Six Nations.

Before Melita "very kindly" bought these exclusive rights, all remaining sport was being aired at a rate of Lm4.95 per month, while the Uefa Champions League was aired on TVM and Mediaset and the Formula 1 aired on the Rai stations free of charge.

A week after this announcement, Melita dropped the bombshell. They announced that as from March 1, the Sports Channel price will go up to Lm7.50 per month. What will happen to those subscribers who have been loyal enough since the Sports Channel was launched and paid annually in advance? Will they be made to pay extra for an unrequested service which we had before at no extra charge?

Since they expect to be compensated for their achievements, how about compensating their subscribers for the blocking of other stations during the transmissions of Serie A and Uefa Cup matches? Are not the Rai stations, Mediaset and La 7 part of the package that its subscribers are paying for? By blocking them during these times, are they not 1robbing its subscribers for something which is theirs? And by the way, what happened to the MTV channels?

With this attitude, Melita will only lose customers as I think it is now time to stop this monopoly once and for all. Like many others, we will also revert to using the antenna.
