The traditional NCW Foundation Day celebration, held on Thursday, February 16, was another popular event in the council's calendar. Members and guests met at the Casino Maltese for dinner - a change from the usual lunch.

Guests of honour, Mrs Mary Fenech Adami, wife of the President of Malta, Mrs Catherine Gonzi, wife of the Prime Minister, and Family and Social Solidarity Minister Dolores Cristina attended the occasion, which serves to recall the birth of the council and to pay tribute to all past members who have contributed to the advancement of women in the past 42 years.

In her address, president Helga Ellul thanked the members for their commitment and hard work, all on voluntary basis. As is typical of her, she stressed the importance of being proactive and of adapting to the changing needs of society.

It is up to us women, now, to grasp all the opportunities available for growth and development. Founder member and honorary president Jane Spiteri outlined the milestones of the council's work, emphasising how important it is, especially for the young, to be familiar with the council's history and achievements, the result of which - equality between men and women - is becoming more of a reality.

On this memorable occasion, Mrs Gonzi was awarded Honorary Life Membership in recognition of "Her active involvement in voluntary organisations, community welfare programmes and initiatives, particularly those related to children and mental health, and for her contribution to public life".

Mrs Gonzi warmly thanked the Council and expressed her conviction that more young women will come forward to use their talents for the benefit of society.
