The maritime and aviation section of the General Workers' Union yesterday filed a judicial letter informing the five bidders for the port merchandise tender that the company awarded the contract was to abide by EU laws on transfer of business.

The letter, filed in the First Hall of the Civil Court, was addressed to the Malta Maritime Authority and the five bidders: Hili Company Ltd, La Valletta Terminal Co Ltd, Malta Ports Terminals, TF Shipping Agencies and Kuwait & Gulf Link Stevedoring Company Ltd.

Once the MMA awarded the contract, the selected company was to abide by the EU directive on the approximation of the laws of the member states relating to the safeguarding of employee's rights in the event of transfers of businesses.

Lawyer Aaron Mifsud Bonnici signed the letter.
