The Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise has lamented what it said was a lack of proper monitoring of goods entering Malta's shores from other EU member states particularly from Sicily.
This was among the chamber's preoccupations raised by chamber president Victor A. Galea during a meeting with Edwin Vassallo, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Competitiveness and Communications.
Mr Galea said these goods were still liable to fiscal and administrative procedures before they could be allowed to be placed on supermarket shelves.
The chamber insisted that without such market surveillance, the local market would suffer from the disadvantages of free movement of goods.
It said it was encouraged to note that Mr Vassallo was fully aware of this problem and expressed a willingness to assist the chamber in finding a lasting solution.
